Reflections on Internship at Bethany

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
– John 13:34-35

If there is one word that I would use to describe my opportunity during the internship, it would be – “Love”. What does “Love” really mean?

In Theory

As we study from the book of John each morning, we learn about the life of Jesus and the love that He showed. There was always an unmistakable deep sense of love, whether it was the Jewish leaders, or the multitudes, or His disciples.

In Examples

We read about God’s great love to us through the Bible, but another way of learning is through His people. As interns, we had the privilege of attending lessons with the Pastors each day. It is only with a deep sense of love could anyone bother to teach a bunch of ignorant young people for two hours every day. But beyond these “classroom lessons”, we were showered with lots of love throughout the weeks, and even having special meals outside of church once in a while. These acts of love are things that I hold dear to my heart and I am truly thankful for them.

In Application

Having learnt and seen some examples of love, our only valid course of action is to respond appropriately. During the course of 6 months, we were given the opportunity to put into practice the lessons that we were learning. For instance, during the Family Camp in March and in the recently concluded Junior Camp, we spent much time trying to reach out and care for the children. Having a hands-on experience was one way in which I sought to develop a sense of love for others and it has been a blessing to my heart.

I thank God for giving me this opportunity to take up the internship experience. It has given me a better understanding of my faith, and what it means to live as one who is truly saved.
