The glorious joy of being in the house of God
When we think of being in the house of the Lord, how do we feel? There should be no greater joy than being in His house. The sons of Korah reflected this perspective, “For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand.” (Psalm 84:10) They made a comparison between being in the courts of the temple and being somewhere else. For the sons of Korah, they were not allowed to enter into the courts of the temple…only the priest could go in. But to them, it is better to be in the courts of the temple for one day than to be elsewhere for a thousand years. This reflected a great sense of joy in being His temple. Let’s find a glorious sense of joy in being in God’s house.
Joy in serving God in His house
“I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” (Psalm 84:10)
There were those who looked into the keeping of the doors in the temple. The sons of Korah felt that it was better to serve in the house of the Lord as a doorkeeper than to remain in the tents of wickedness. Personally, I am able to appreciate this verse as I stay in church and have been opening and closing the doors of Bethany for over 10 years now. I can understand the desire of the sons of Korah to serve in the temple even though it may be just a simple job of being a doorkeeper. It is indeed a special joy to be in the house of the Lord each day. Let’s find tremendous joy in being in and serving in the house of the Lord.
Joy that stems from our knowledge of the Lord
How do we find such a special joy? This joy stems from our knowledge and faith in the Lord. The sons of Korah had a tremendous love for the Lord’s house based on their understanding of God. They understood God in the following ways…
1. He is like the sun and shield
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield;” (Psalm 84:11)
The Lord shines like the sun…full of glory and He specially protects His people like a shield.
2. He is the Giver of grace and glory
“The Lord will give grace and glory;” (Psalm 84:11)
The Lord is a gracious God and seeks to extend His abundant grace to all His people. He also reflects great glory as seen in His grace.
3. He blesses with all good things
“No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)
Everything that God blesses us with is good. He does not withhold His blessings for all who walk uprightly. Let us be challenged to walk in obedience to the Lord.
As we seek to know God and appreciate Him for all that He is, let us respond with a greater sense of love for the Lord and His house. Let’s find glorious joy in being in His house.
