Time To Look At Our Use Of Time

The halfway mark
We have just crossed over the halfway mark of the year. Six months have come and gone. Time has flown! With each year that I get older, I do feel that time passes on much faster. David described in different ways how transient our days on this earth are, “Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapor.” (Psalm 39:5) These descriptions emphasize for us how short our life on this earth is. How long does vapor last? In an instant, it is gone. If a lifetime on this earth is seen as vapor, how much more transient should we view the last six months? Let’s be conscious of this as we enter into the second half of this year.
Time to take stock of the year
It is good at this point of time to take stock of how this year has been for us. Let’s ask ourselves, “How have we been walking with the Lord? How have we been using our time?”
David made some insightful remarks about man, “Surely they busy themselves in vain; he heaps up riches and does not know who will gather them.” (Psalm 39:6) There are many who are busying themselves with work each day. They are heaping up for themselves wealth. But this could all be in vain. Let us not be drawn to the riches of the world but rethink how we are living our life.
1. Prayer
“Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am.” (Psalm 39:4)
This should be our prayer … to know what our end will be all too soon. We want to be able to realize the measure of our days … that we are indeed frail. Let’s appreciate the time that we have left in this year and in our life.
2. Perspective
“When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor.” (Psalm 39:11)
This is a good perspective to have … that the Lord would allow us to go through the challenges of life that we may recognize the error of our ways. The Lord corrects us of our iniquities and helps us rethink how we are living our life … that we should no longer continue in our sins but should follow His ways.
3. Focus
“And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.” (Psalm 39:7)
What should our focus be? Our focus should be to hope in God. No matter what state we are in … we should have a great sense of hope in the Lord. We should hope that our sins will be overcome … that we may use our time and life far more wisely. Our hope should not be in riches and the things of the world but wholly in God. Let’s be challenged to look forward to using our time well in the next half of the year … that we may number our days and apply our heart to wisdom.
