Text: Jeremiah 31-32
“A NEW COVENANT”
(I) THE PROMISE OF A NEW COVENANT
1. Historical reference to Judah and Israel (Jeremiah 31:31)
2. Features of the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:33)
a) I will put My law in their minds (Jeremiah 31:33)
b) And write it on their hearts (Jeremiah 31:33)
c) I will be their God and they shall be My people (Jeremiah 31:33)
d) All shall know God, from the least to the greatest (Jeremiah 31:34)
e) I will forgive their iniquity (Jeremiah 31:34)
f) Their sin I will remember no more (Jeremiah 31:34)
(II) THE SOLEMNITY OF THE GIVING OF THE NEW COVENANT
1. An oath in the name of the Lord
The LORD of hosts is His name (Jeremiah 31:35).
2. An oath compared to the Ordinances of the sun and the moon (Jeremiah 31:35-36)
a) As the sun and moon are stable
b) So the New Covenant will stand firm and certain
3. An oath compared to the heavens and the earth
a) As the heavens cannot be measured
b) So great is God’s commitment to His New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:37)
(III) THE NEW COVENANT ESTABLISHED
1. By the Lord Jesus (Matthew 26:28)
2. To be comprehended (Hebrews 8:7-13)
3. Its significance extends beyond Israel
(IV) APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
1. Exercise greater faith in the Lord
“Is there anything too hard for Me?” Jeremiah 32:27
2. Build an appropriate fear of God
“That they may fear Me forever” Jeremiah 32:40
