“ASK FOR THE OLD PATHS WHERE THE GOOD WAY IS”
(I) THE DILEMMA OF THE PEOPLE
1. Forsaking of God, the fountain of living waters (Jeremiah 2:13, 17, 19)
a) Repeated many times
b) To show gravity of this sin
2. Hewing broken cisterns that can hold no water (Jeremiah 2:13)
a) Foolishness
b) Forgone conclusion as to the worth of the broken cisterns
3. Wickedness (Jeremiah 2:19)
4. From a noble vine to a degenerate one (Jeremiah 2:21)
(II) THE WAY OUT OF THIS DILEMMA
1. Re-consideration of the present ways
a) Threat of War (Jeremiah 6:1-7)
b) Covetousness (Jeremiah 6:13)
c) Superficiality (Jeremiah 6:14)
2. Re-consideration of the old ways
a) Stand in the old ways and see (Jeremiah 6:16)
b) Ask for the old paths, where the good path is (Jeremiah 6:16)
c) Walk in it (Jeremiah 6:16)
d) Then you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16)
3. Re-consideration words of warning
a) Warning from the watchmen of the city
b) Listen to the sounds of the trumpets warning of invasion (Jeremiah 6:17)
(III) SAD DECISIONS
1. Negative Response
“We will not listen” Jeremiah 6:17
2. Results of this decision
a) Fruit of their thoughts (Jeremiah 6:19)
i) They have not heeded My words (Jeremiah 6:19)
ii) They have rejected My law (Jeremiah 6:19)
b) Stumbling blocks would appear
i) Fathers and sons will fall
ii) Neighbours and friends will perish (Jeremiah 6:21)
(IV) PLEA OF THE PROPHET JEREMIAH
1. Dress in sackcloth (Jeremiah 6:28)
2. Make mourning as for an only son (Jeremiah 6:28)
