Text: Psalm 106:34-48
“THEY WERE DEFILED BY THEIR OWN WORKS”
(I) APPRECIATING THE MIGHTY WORKS OF GOD
1. They are mighty acts of the Lord (Psalm 106:2a)
2. They are praise-worthy (Psalm 106:2b)
3. They express His favour (Psalm 106:4a)
4. They bring about salvation (deliverance) (Psalm 106:4b)
5. They bring about benefits (rewards) (Psalm 106:5a)
6. They can benefit the entire nation (Psalm 106:5b)
7. They are God’s inheritance (Psalm 106:5c)
(II) DANGERS RECALLED
1. Sin (Psalm 106:6a)
2. Iniquity (Psalm 106:6b)
3. Wickedness (Psalm 106:6c)
4. Poor understanding of God’s works (Psalm 106:7a)
5. Poor remembrance of God’s works (Psalm 106:7b)
6. Failure to remember God’s mercies (Psalm 106:7c)
7. Rebellion by the Red Sea (Psalm 106:7d)
(III) DEFILED BY THEIR OWN WORKS
Psalm 106:35-39
1. Essentially this is a reference to Idolatry and its consequences
2. Consequences of idolatry
a) The idols became a snare (Psalm 106:36b)
b) They offered human sacrifices (their own sons and daughters) (Psalm 106:37)
c) They shed innocent blood (Psalm 106:38a)
d) The whole land was polluted by the blood shed (Psalm 106:38b)
e) They were defiled by their own deeds (Psalm 106:39)
(IV) DIVINE JUDGMENT
1. God’s wrath was kindled (Psalm 106:40a)
2. He abhorred His own inheritance (Psalm 106:40b)
3. He delivered them to the Gentiles (Psalm 106:41)
4. They suffered oppression from their enemies (Psalm 106:42)
5. They were brought low because of their iniquity (Psalm 106:43)
(V) IS THERE STILL HOPE?
1. God still hears our cries (Psalm 106:44)
2. He remembers His covenant (Psalm 106:45)
3. He will still show mercy (Psalm 106:45b)
3. He will still send help (Psalm 106:46)
