Dear Parents,
THE PRACTICE OF INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR CHILDREN
One of the most powerful ways of teaching children is not in ordering them around. Yes, as parents we have a certain amount of “authority”. However, if we merely command our children to obey us, we would not be able to effect much.
The following passage teaches us how to practise interactive communication with our children.
My son, hear the instruction of your father.
And do not forsake the law of your mother;
For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your neck.Proverbs 1:8-9
FEATURES OF INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION
Note the following features:-
1. The personal element is very strong. Note the use of the phrases, “My son…” and “Your father” and yet again “Your mother…”
2. There is understanding that the words given to the children are nothing less than “instruction” and “law”. However, when words are given by way of interactive communication, children would listen a little better. There is firmness and yet openness. There is strength and yet gentleness.
3. There is strong and positive encouragement. This is an important thing to note. The instruction is given in the most positive language. Note the phrases, “graceful ornament” and “chains about your neck”.
CHILDREN NEED INSTRUCTION THAT COMES WITH EXPLANATION
Yes, our children need to be instructed. With proper instruction, they will become wise. However, children learn best when there is interaction.
Though we are not given the responses of the children, nevertheless the fact still remains. Parents must allow their children a little leeway to express themselves. They must be encouraged to ask questions. They must be allowed to interact.
The questioning of instructions given by parents must not be seen as a challenge to parental authority. The questions that children raise up may be seen as a healthy opportunity to practise interactive communication of instruction.
ATTEMPT TO PRACTISE INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION ALWAYS
Even when children may “rebel” let the practice of interactive communication be practised. This concept when practised consistently has good long-term results.
