Dear Parents,
TEACHING BY POINTING OUT THINGS
We can learn many lessons from the Book of Proverbs with reference to parenting. Here is an interesting technique used by the writer.
These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven things are an abomination to Him.
A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.Proverbs 6:16-19
What an effective technique this is. Certain sins are pointed out as worse than others!
DELINEATING SINS FOR EMPHASIS
This technique of teaching also involves delineating the sins and numbering them. Seven sins are particularly highlighted. This enables parents to do a number of things:-
1. Focus
There are many wrong things to correct in a child. It is wise to focus on the major problems rather than the minor.
2. Alert
When certain sins are highlighted, children learn better. They become more alert and will try even harder to avoid those sins.
GET CHILDREN TO KNOW THIS LIST OF SEVEN ABOMINABLE SINS
Since there is a numbering of the sins, it becomes easier for children to remember what these problem areas are. List the sins in modern day language for easier comprehension. (E.g. 1. Pride, 2. Lying etc. Your homework)
Make sure that the children understand that God Himself dislikes these sins. Thus they must make every effort to avoid them.
It would be helpful to come up with a positive list of seven things that would offer a positive alternative. (1. Humility; 2. Truth etc. Your homework).
It takes creativity to teach children effectively. You must try and get the creative juices flowing. This would involve your doing some “homework”. Take out pen and paper and complete the above.
Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
