Text: Proverbs 13
13 April 2003

Dear Parents,

WORDS OF WISDOM CONCERNING THE SUBJECT OF WEALTH
The Bible has much to say about wealth. Contrary to the opinion of some, the Scriptures do not proscribe the acquisition of wealth. Let us consider these wise words concerning the subject of wealth.

1. Wealth and diligence

Wealth is a just reward for the diligent. Those who are lazy can only dream of obtaining wealth.

The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing;
But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

Proverbs 13:4

2. True and False Wealth

There is true wealth. There is also false wealth. They are carefully distinguished.

There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing;
And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.

Proverbs 13:7

a) There are those who think that by hoarding money, they will become rich. In fact these are poor people.

b) There are those who share their wealth, and through alms-giving they become “poor”. They are in fact rich!

The rich are not distinguished by the amount of wealth they have accumulated. Neither are the poor measured by what they do not possess.

3. Wealth from dishonesty

Some people would do anything to be wealthy. We are challenged to consider an important truth. Wealth must be gained in the right way, never through dishonest means.

Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished,
But he who gathers by labour will increase.

Proverbs 13:11

4. Wealth and Inheritance

The blessing on the righteous wealthy is such that the next generation will benefit.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.

Proverbs 13:22

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
