Text: Proverbs 18
27 February 2005

Dear Parents,

MANY PROBLEMS IN LIFE
All of us struggle with problems in life! Some succeed, many do not! One of the biggest problems many struggle with is the sin of laziness or sloth. The following text deals with this problem in a most direct manner.

He who is slothful in his work
Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.

Proverbs 18:9

1. There are those who are “destroyers”

That this is true is obvious. There are many who glorify the idea of death and destruction. Suicide bombers may well be classified in this category.

2. The slothful person

What is amazing is the comparison between the slothful person and the destroyer. They are called “brothers.” The slothful man is no better than the destroyer!

3. A quick review of statements made about the slothful/lazy person

As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
So is the lazy man to those who send him.

Proverbs 10:26

The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting…

Proverbs 12:27

The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing…

Proverbs 13:4

The way of a lazy man is like a hedge of thorns…

Proverbs 15:19

In every observation, the Biblical writer notes that sloth or laziness is not something to be condoned!

ARE OUR CHILDREN DEVELOPING SLOTHFUL HABITS?
Is it possible for our children to grow up lazy or slothful? Yes! Watch out for the following things that encourage sloth!

1. Uncontrolled watching of TV/movies

2. Uncontrolled use of games (Internet/video etc)

3. Uncontrolled habits in the home – sleeping, eating

Let us do our utmost to ensure that our children develop good habits!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
