Text: Proverbs 17
14 November 2004

Dear Parents,

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL
Once again, we come across some texts that make references to evil. We cannot escape the fact that evil is found everywhere. It has powerful influences and we would do well to take heed of yet another reminder of the presence of evil.

An evil man seeks only rebellion;
Therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against him…

Proverbs 17:11

Whoever rewards evil for good,
Evil will not depart from his house…

Proverbs 17:13

He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just,
Both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

Proverbs 17:15

A TERRIBLE EXPRESSION OF EVIL
Everywhere in the world, the problem of “rebellion” wreaks havoc! Peaceful countries become turbulent. It sometimes takes decades before any semblance of normality can be seen! Thousands die and many more suffer because of rebellion! The root of rebellion is nothing less than pure evil! Let’s warn our children about evil!

GOD’S PUNISHMENT OF THE PROBLEM OF EVIL
Where the path of righteousness is spurned, and open rebellion takes place, then God has to step in to mete out His justice.

1. A Solemn Declaration

The Biblical text declares a solemn truth! Evil men and evil deeds are an abomination to the Lord!

2. A Solemn Judgment

Two things are especially highlighted:-

a) “A cruel messenger will be sent against him”

God will stop the man who perpetrates evil. He will not use gentle ways to correct him. He will use every means possible to stop the activities of the evil man. The evil man may well get a taste of his own medicine.

b) “Evil will not depart from his house”

Evil leaves more than ugly scars on the soul. Evil can adhere to the house of the evil man almost like a malevolent spirit waiting to pounce on members of the evil household. What a terrible fate awaits the evil man! May we flee from the face of evil!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
