Text: Proverbs 23
2 July 2006

Dear Parents,

EXTOLLING WISDOM
Throughout the Book of Proverbs, the pursuit of “wisdom” is encouraged. Sometimes, wisdom is personified. At other times, it is presented as a goal that is worth more than earthly treasures.

FURTHER WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO PURSUE WISDOM
More words of encouragement to pursue wisdom may be found in the following texts:-

Apply your heart to instruction,
And your ears to words of knowledge.

Proverbs 23:12

Hear, my son, and be wise;
And guide your heart in the way.

Proverbs 23:19

Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:22

Buy the truth, and do not sell it,
Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

Proverbs 23:23

1. The onus of obtaining wisdom is on the individual

How are our children going to find wisdom? The onus is really on them. They will have to “apply (their) hearts to instruction”. They would have no one to blame but themselves, if they were to fail to obtain wisdom.

a) Our children must apply their hearts to hear good instruction.

b) They must guide their hearts in the way of life.

2. Good choices must be made time and again

a) Choosing to listen to parents.

b) Choosing to “buy the truth” and “not sell it”.

c) Choosing “instruction and understanding”.

Only when we decide to do the above, would we obtain wisdom.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
