Text: Proverbs 25
5 November 2006

Dear Parents,

THE IDEAL RULER
What would an ideal ruler be like? This ancient proverb offers this thought.

As the heavens for height and the earth for depth,
So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Proverbs 25:3

How should we understand this text? Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. A challenge to all rulers

This text is certainly a great challenge to all kings. Much is expected of all who rule.

a) Reference to the heavens

A number of thoughts may be suggested:-

i) With reference to nobility of character

ii) With reference to greatness of the mind

A good king should ever seek to cultivate both his character and his mind. Then would he be able to discharge his regal duties justly.

b) Reference to the earth

i) With reference to depth of thought

ii) With reference to fruitfulness of endeavours

A good king must not allow himself to be shallow or short-sighted. He must know how to discharge his responsibilities in practical and fruitful ways.

2. How rulers may meet this challenge

God made special provision for rulers so that they could rule well and wisely.

a) Knowledge of God’s laws (Deuteronomy 17:14-20)

i) Prohibitions

ii) Encouragement

b) Abiding by God’s laws

A good king would do well to know that he too has to abide by God’s laws. On the one hand, he must make sure that he heeds God’s prohibitions. On the other, he must make sure that he finds time to read the Scriptures, for personal growth and edification.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
