Text: Proverbs 25
7 January 2007

Dear Parents,

TYPES OF RELATIONSHIP
It is important that we teach our children how to cultivate relationships. Three types of relationships must be carefully considered.

1. A relationship with God

a) With God as Saviour… Gratitude

b) With God as Lord… Obedience

2. A relationship with Family

a) Love

b) Loyalty

3. A relationship with friends and neighbours

a) Discernment

b) Discretion

ON THE SUBJECT OF NEIGHBOURS
Let us take time to ponder the following text. It is a highly instructive word concerning the subject of being neighbours.

Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house,
Lest he become weary of you and hate you.

Proverbs 25:17

1. A neighbour… a necessary component of a community

Community was an important concept, then and now. Neighbours, people who live in the same neighbourhood are part of a living community.

2. A neighbour… is not family

Community is not family. A neighbour must not be mistaken as “family” either.

3. Possibility of a strained relationship

It is possible for any relationship to become strained. Neighbours who are initially friendly may be filled with animosity one day. It is thus wise to keep a well-defined amount of distance, where neighbourliness is concerned. Wisdom must prevail.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
