Text: Proverbs 27
26 August 2007

Dear Parents,

CHALLENGE TO “BE WISE”
The following is a proverb that has a very deeply personal application.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad,
That I may answer him who reproaches me.

Proverbs 27:11

1. “My son”

a) This may be the “teacher” speaking.

b) It may also be the “father”.

2. A wise son

a) He will bring gladness to the heart.

b) To the heart of the teacher/father.

3. A special context

a) It may be a context where the behaviour of the son may be in question.

b) It may be a context where the response of the son may be queried.

c) The axiom of how the son would reflect his parents’ upbringing may be in serious question.

THE QUEST TO “BE WISE”
We are reminded once again of the earlier chapters in the book of Proverbs where wisdom is extolled. Two texts stand out in particular.

Wisdom is the principal thing,
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.

Proverbs 4:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Proverbs 9:10

Let us never cease in our efforts to encourage our children to seek wisdom.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
