Text: Proverbs 28
6 April 2008

Dear Parents,

THE EYE AS THE LAMP OF THE BODY
It was the Lord Jesus Himself who warned His disciples how to guard their eye from becoming evil.

The lamp of the body is the eye.
If therefore your eye is good,
Your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eye is bad, your whole body
will be full of darkness.

Matthew 6:22-23

AN ANCIENT TRUTH
The origin of this truth may be traced to this text from Proverbs.

A man with an evil eye hastens after riches,
And does not consider that poverty will come upon him.

Proverbs 28:22

1. The eye of perspective

The eye is the perspective we adopt towards life! Whatever perspective we adopt will affect our view and our approach to life.

2. An evil eye

What is an evil eye?

a) It is one that thinks that material wealth is all there is to life.

b) Adopting this perspective, he pours all his energy to obtaining riches.

3. Limitation of this approach

This approach to life has severe limitations:-

a) Riches are ephemeral.

b) They may seem to last but the end could be poverty.

c) The person who pursues wealth as his only goal in life puts himself in danger.

THE NEED TO OPEN THE EYES OF OUR CHILDREN
We cannot dismiss the challenge of meeting the necessities of life. Our children need to be taught how to work and be prudent if they are to succeed in life. But their perspective of life must not be limited to just the acquisition of wealth!

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
