Genesis
"The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times." Psalm 12:6
Text: Genesis 9:1-28
THE ESTABLISHING OF THE NOAHIC COVENANT
The words of blessing from God to Noah may be found in the following text.
“And as for you, be fruitful and multiply;
bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.”GENESIS 9:7
To confirm this blessing from the Lord, a formal Covenant was also declared.
“Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:
‘And as for Me, behold, I establish My Covenant with you
and with your descendants after you, and with every
living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and
every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark,
every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My Covenant with you:
never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood;
never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”GENESIS 9:8-11
FEATURES OF THE NOAHIC COVENANT
Two features of the Covenant may be highlighted:-
1. The Noahic Covenant extended to All inhabitants of the earth
Though God spoke to Noah and his sons, the Covenant established was not exclusive to them! The human race, as well as all of God’s creatures were included in this Covenant.
2. The Promise that God would never destroy the Earth with a Flood again
What a wonderfully soul-uplifting declaration God gave! But what if man were to sin terribly again? What if there was a repeat of the evil times as in the days of Noah? We have this re-assuring word from the Lord.
“I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake,
Although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth;
Nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.”GENESIS 8:21
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NOAHIC COVENANT
It is amazing that God would offer a Covenant at all to man, let alone one of this magnitude! By faith we understand and appreciate the Being of God! He knew man’s heart only too well. Deep in his heart, man would always have the wrong kind of fear. Would God destroy the earth again? To allay and to dispel all fears, God established the Noahic Covenant. He promised through a Covenant that He would not repeat history!
The world is arguably as wicked as in the days of Noah, if not worse! God has not taken one step to send another universal flood! His words are pure words! He would never go back on any word that He has given to man!
