Genesis
"Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually, 'The Lord be magnified!'" Psalm 40:16
Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67
AN EXAMPLE OF FAITHFULNESS
What a tremendous servant Eliezer was! He was truly faithful! Without wasting a moment, he prepared for his long journey! (He probably would have brought some of the other servants with him, though that was not specifically mentioned).
“Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed,
for all his master’s goods were in his hand. And he arose and
went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.”GENESIS 24:10
It would have been virtually impossible for one man to look after 10 camels laden with bridal gifts! It would have been utterly foolish to travel alone, especially when the distance is some 450 miles away from Canaan! He would have been robbed if not killed by bands of marauders who prey on caravans! Eliezer obviously go fully prepared! (Genesis 24:54 confirms that Eliezer had some men with him on his trip).
A HUMBLE PRAYER
The long journey in due course drew to an end. An uneventful and safe journey was something to thank God for! His mission for his master in mind, Eliezer exercised his own personal faith in God.
“And he made his camels kneel down outside the city
by a well of water at evening time, the time when women
go out to draw water. Then he said, ‘O Lord God of my master
Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness
to my master Abraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water,
and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw
water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say,
‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says,
‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’ – let her be the one
You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will
know that You have shown kindness to my master.'”GENESIS 24:11-14
“Lord God of my master Abraham”
What a formal way of addressing God! What humility shown too! Though Eliezer obviously had faith in the Lord, he nevertheless deferred to his master even in the matter of addressing the Lord.
“Show kindness to my master Abraham”
Once again, the spirit of deference emerged in his prayer! Eliezer must have loved and respected Abraham greatly. His plea was for kindness to be shown to his master. Nothing else mattered! With all his faith, Eliezer pleaded with God to also show great kindness to his young master Isaac! What faithfulness and devotion shown!
