Genesis
"Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! Sing out the honour of His Name; Make His praises glorious." Psalm 66:1-2
Text: Genesis 24 : 1 - 67
ADMIRABLE QUALITIES
The Scriptures reveal many admirable qualities in Eliezer. He displayed wonderful spiritual qualities of faith and worship. He also displayed a tremendous sense of faithfulness and loyalty to his master, Abraham! The thought of abuse of confidence and trust never occurred in his mind! He could never betray his beloved master, for he too worshipped the same glorious God!
A GREAT SENSE OF PURPOSE AS WELL
Eliezer was a very focused person! He had succeeded in obtaining the consent of Bethuel to have Rebekah married to Isaac! That was some achievement, for Rebekah and her family members had never even heard of Isaac previously, let alone know what he was like! Eliezer knew that God’s hand of blessing was involved, for there was no other explanation for all that had happened! There was one more thing to do – he must leave for home immediately! His sense of purpose was that strong!
“Then they arose in the morning, and he said,
‘Send me away to my master.'”GENESIS 24:54b
INITIAL OBJECTIONS
As may be expected, the family raised objections! How could they just let Rebekah go immediately?
“But her brother and her mother said, ‘Let the young woman
Stay with us a few days, at least ten; after that she may go.'”GENESIS 24:55
The protests of the family were not invalid. How could they expect Rebekah to leave kith and kin immediately? The proposal of marriage was so sudden, notwithstanding the wonderful testimony of Eliezer about God’s hand of blessing! They were not going back on their word, but couldn’t Rebekah stay for just a few days more? What was so difficult about that request?
FIRM AND TRUE TO THE VERY END
Eliezer was not called the most faithful and trusted servant of Abraham for nothing! He was entrusted with this great responsibility of securing a good marriage-partner for Isaac! He could be trusted to do his work with the greatest sense of efficiency and faithfulness. He did not delay when given his orders. He would not delay either now that he had been successful. He was but a servant under orders! He could not rest till he had fully discharged all his responsibilities! Quietly, but with great sense of purpose, Eliezer pleaded with the family to let him return to his master, Abraham.
“And he said to them, ‘Do not hinder me, since the Lord
has prospered my way; send me away so that I may go
to my master.'”GENESIS 24:56
