REMEMBER NOW YOUR CREATOR

One Short Life

The death of our sister, Whee Ling, reinforces the truth of how undeniably fleeting life is. The inevitable reality of our death is especially poignant for myself because she is just one year younger than me. I still have a picture of her in our school days when we were involved in a YPG games day. It did not seem like a long time ago. Yet, her lot in life towards the end was to grapple with cancer and to finally to be called home to the Lord at a prime age of 45. We thank God that her suffering has ended. She held fast to her faith and is now home with the Lord Jesus in heaven. As I reflect on this during the week, I am reminded of this one short life that we have and how we are seeking to live it.

The Problem Of Wasting Our Youth

“For childhood and youth are vanity.”
Ecclesiastes 11:10

King Solomon had lived a full life in worldly terms. He had all that he wanted and experienced all there was to experience. Towards the end of Ecclesiastes, it is interesting to note that his address was to young people and not adults. He knew how young people in their youthful ways would waste their time away. Children only think of doing fun things. When we are in our youth, the common tendency is to walk in the ways of our heart without any consideration for the long-term consequences of our actions. This was considered by Solomon as vanity. The root problem is that people tend to forget God and not actively remember and include Him in their life. Young people, let’s seek to correct this wrong.

The Challenge To Remember God In Our Youth

“Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come,
And the years draw near when you say,
‘I have no pleasure in them'”

Ecclesiastes 12:1

1. With A Great Accountability To God

The Lord God is our Creator. He is the One who created all man. The person whom we should be most accountable to with reference to our life is not our parents nor our teachers. It should ultimately be the Lord God. Let’s seek to highly honour Him in our youth. One day, when we die, we will all return to Him (Ecclesiastes 12:7). He will bring all things that we have done into judgment. He created us and we will return to Him. It is best that we be most conscious of Him, rejoice and set aside evil in our heart (Ecclesiastes 11:10).

2. With A Great Sense Of Urgency

We should remember the Lord and exercise faith in Him now and not later. If we don’t, the difficult days of old age will soon come. Life will pass us by faster than we realise. The years draw near where we will no longer be strong as we are now (Ecclesiastes 12:6). There would be less teeth in the mouth to chew our food with. We would tire and fear more easily. On top of that, death would also come sooner than we think. We may consider that we are strong now but the day will come when no matter how strong a silver string used to tie a knot or a golden bowl is, they would still be loosed and broken respectively. Death will come to one and all. Let’s seek to include God so much more in our life. Let’s fear Him and do His commandments while we have the strength to do so.
