Matching Our Life With Our Calling
It is really exciting knowing that we have been called by God. It brings a tremendous sense of purpose to the core of our existence. And yet, more often than not, we do not live up to the calling that God has given us as His servants. The apostle Paul challenged the Ephesian Church to match life with the calling that the Lord had given.
“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called”
Ephesians 4:1
Paul strongly exhorted the brethren of Ephesus to live their life in a manner that was worthy of being called by the Lord. He has given us a divine calling to be His saints and His people … to be His kind of Church. This calling also brings a tremendous sense of hope to our heart.
“Just as you were called in one hope of your calling”
Ephesians 4:4
This calling enables us to have the same sense of hope in the Lord. It brings us so much more together as a Church. Our challenge is to live up to the Lord’s calling with this sense of hope.
Applying The Fruit Of The Spirit To Our Calling
“With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:2-3
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
Galatians 5:22-23
If a comparison is made between the attributes in the text of Ephesians 4:2 with the fruits of the Spirit in the text of Galatians 5:22, some similarities can be noted. The common attributes are gentleness, longsuffering, love and peace. The fruit of the Spirit is applied with reference to how we can live in oneness of heart as His people in the text of Ephesians 4:2. The challenge is for us to walk in all humility and gentleness. Humility and gentleness go very much together. Without learning how to think lowly of oneself, we would not know how to be gentle to others. There should be a deep sense of patience with working with each other. Furthermore, the Spirit of God would help us to learn to tolerate each other in love. Love enables us to have a mature approach towards relating to one another. We would also be diligent in keeping this sense of unity as God’s people. Let’s do all we can to keep this bond of peace. Let’s not allow anything or anyone to come between us as His people.
One Body And One Spirit
“One body and one Spirit”
Ephesians 4:4
It is the Spirit of God that brings us together as one in a Church. The Church is meant to be united as members of a body are. If each member chooses to do what he wants, the body cannot function as one. The oneness in the body comes about through the Spirit of God. When we have oneness of spirit through the work of the Spirit of God, the body of Christ will be one. This Saturday, the YPG is going to have a Games Day. Let’s seek to practise this whole idea of being one as a Young People’s Group as we come together to play and enjoy each other’s fellowship. Let’s learn to develop a greater sense of bond with each other. It is the Spirit of God who brings us closer as one. Let’s build stronger bonds of love and peace with each other. Let’s always seek to be one body and one Spirit.
