ADORNING THE DOCTRINE OF GOD AS OUR SAVIOUR

Salvation Is Something We Should Wear

Easter is just around the corner. It is the time of the year where we take a bit more time to reflect and rejoice in our precious Saviour and the salvation that He gave to us. Our eternal hope in going to heaven should not be something we appreciate only at Easter time. In fact, salvation is a doctrine that is meant to be deeply appreciated and be “worn” at all times. Paul, in the book of Titus, was addressing how bondservants should be good Christian workers. The reason for this is that the doctrine of God as our Saviour should be “worn” in practical living.

“That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.” 
Titus 2:10b

The word “adorn” has the idea of being made more beautiful through the putting on of ornaments or clothing. The doctrine of salvation is not something that we understand with the mind only. It is a system of teaching that should be adorned on our lives. Salvation should not be a “static” system of thought. It is a doctrine that must dynamically and actively affect our choices and lifestyle. In all things that we say and do, the hope and joy of salvation that God has given to us should be specially displayed. If bondservants are meant to do this, even so we should practise this.

Appreciating The Grace Of God That Brings Salvation

How can we adorn the doctrine of salvation? It begins with a deep of appreciation of the grace of God extended to us in salvation.

1. Grace Extended To All Men

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” 
Titus 2:11

What stands out about our salvation in Christ is the grace of God. It is only by the grace of God that we are saved through faith in Christ Jesus. It was because of His abundant and amazing grace that salvation had appeared to all men when the Lord Jesus died on the cross. This was a most spectacular display of His grace. God’s grace is most extensive. It is not limited to those whom God is going to save. It is meant for all men. The grace of God reaches to all men.

2. Grace Extended Through The Great Sacrifice Of Christ

“Our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed” 
Titus 2:13-14

Paul wrote of how the Lord Jesus Christ is regarded as our great God. He is in no way lesser than God the Father. Yet, He was willing to submit to the Father’s will in order to be our Saviour. He gave His glorious life for our sins. This is indeed the grace of God. We are all so undeserving yet He did it for us. He gave Himself for us wholeheartedly and selflessly. Because the Lord loves us and is most gracious toward us, He gave Himself once and for all for our iniquities that He may redeem us. The word “redeem” means “to recover ownership of something when a specific price is paid”. Paul had in mind the idea of how slaves were being sold in the marketplace and how they were redeemed by a benefactor who had paid for their freedom. Christ has paid the price with reference to the penalty of every lawless deed. Let’s truly take the time to appreciate the grace of God shown through our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
