“THAT YOU MAY BECOME SONS OF THE LIGHT”

“Lest Darkness Overtake You”

Light will always overcome darkness. That is a fact established in the text of John 1:5. Light cannot and will never be overwhelmed by darkness. However, if we do not come to the light, darkness can take control of us.

“Lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.”
John 12:35

The Lord Jesus was correcting a wrong understanding that the promised Messiah was going to be with them physically forever. As He taught about His impending crucifixion on the cross, He explained that He would soon have to go away. If the people do not respond to the light, darkness can take hold of them. They would continue to walk in spiritual darkness and blindness and not know where they are going in life. Young people, are you responding to the light of the Lord Jesus?

Responding To The Light Of The World

We have been studying much about the Lord Jesus at the YPG during the second half of this year. Many of us have been enlightened by His light. How should we respond to this light?

1. Exercising Faith In The Light

“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
John 12:36

The Lord Jesus spoke of how His time on earth was coming to an end. When they have the light in their hearts, the Lord Jesus commanded them to believe in the truth of His word. They were to exercise faith in the light that came from His teaching and His example. If they believed with all their heart and soul, they would become sons of light. Their privilege would be to become sons of light forever. They would reflect that light wherever they go. However, not many understood nor believed in what Jesus was saying. Young people, do you believe in the light with all your heart?

2. Choosing To Live In The Light

“A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light”
John 12:35

While we have the light in our hearts, the challenge is to walk in the light. The word “walk” is in the present tense and it depicts a peripatetic principle of life. In other words, this was meant to be a continuous way of life. The people were to live in the light. If we say that we truly believe in the light, then we would also walk in the light as the Lord is in the light (1 John 1:7). We would no longer abide in darkness.

“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.”
John 12:46

Light would be reflected in all that we do in life. Our lifestyle would change because of our belief. Let’s be challenged to walk while we have the light lest darkness overtake us.
