The Problem Of Division Due To Carnality

What is carnality? It is the state of being governed by our own human nature. It is when we allow ourselves to walk in our own fleshly ways and we become worldly and unspiritual. The apostle Paul wrote of how when Christians are carnal, there is a high chance that they will bring about division within the church.

“For where there are envy, strife and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?” 
1 Corinthians 3:3

When we are carnal, we will behave just like people of the world. When they are envious against another, they tend to strive against that person. It is easy for them to end up with schism and division. Carnality causes us, even though we are Christians, to strive against each other. It can influence us to have all kinds of ill feelings towards each other. Sadly, it depicts how spiritually immature we are as Christians. We can end up defiling the Church. Brethren, let’s not be carnal when it comes to the way we relate to each other. Let’s seek to combat any wrong influences of carnality.

Combating The Detrimental Influence Of Carnality

How can we go about combating this problem of carnality?

1. Be Spiritually Mature

“As to spiritual people” 
1 Corinthians 3:1

The challenge for us is to be spiritually more mature. It is time to grow in our faith, improve our walk with God and not remain spiritually immature. Let’s learn to relate to each other with a greater level of spirituality and faith.

2. Be “One” In Ministry

“Now he who plants and he who waters are one” 
1 Corinthians 3:8

It does not matter who “plants” or “waters” in the ministry because ultimately it is God who gives the increase. We are merely His instruments. We are meant to be one in ministry instead of being divided in our spiritual endeavours.

3. Be Careful How We Build

“But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 
1 Corinthians 3:10-11

Our challenge is to build our life and ministry on Christ and His word, and not self. We must seek to be careful and discerning in how we serve. The focus of what we do is Christ and our service must be based on the foundation of Christ. When we do this correctly, one day we will be rewarded for the good work done for Him.
