THE CHALLENGE TO REACH SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Settling Our Basics Once And For All
There are some Christians who never leave spiritual primary school. The reason is simply because they are always failing their “PSLE”. They have to be retained in “primary six” because they do not know their spiritual basics. They do not know the elementary principles of Christ. The writer of Hebrews was exhorting the brethren to settle their spiritual basics and to go beyond.
“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ… not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
Hebrews 6:1-2
What are some of the basic doctrines of Christ that we must know?
1.The doctrine of repentance
2. The doctrine of faith
3. The doctrine of baptism
4. The doctrine of the laying of hands on servants of God
5. The doctrine of the resurrection
6. The doctrine of eternal judgment
We are meant to know these six doctrines well. They are meant to be the foundation of our spiritual life. Let’s not keep laying our Biblical foundations again and again. Let’s seek to know these doctrines well once and for all. Let’s leave the discussion of our spiritual basics and move on to the next level.
Pushing Ourselves Towards Spiritual Maturity
“Let us go on to perfection”
Hebrews 6:1
Reaching spiritual maturity requires us to push ourselves. It is not going to come if we do not put in any effort. We must be driven to reach spiritual fullness. We must grow in our knowledge of the word of God. We must develop our relationship with the Lord Jesus in a deeper way. We must seek the Lord in prayer so much more. We must seek to practise the word of God in our lives and to apply our faith in whatever we do. And yet, we must not take it for granted that it is a given we would reach spiritual maturity.
“And this we will do if God permits.”
Hebrews 6:3
It is something that we must trust God for. It is only by His grace that He will enable us to reach “perfection” (maturity). There must be the confidence that we can achieve it. And yet, we must humbly rely on the Lord to attain maturity. Let’s push ourselves to reach it.
