CHRISTMAS CAROLLING 2010

A Childhood Joy
One thing I look forward to at every Christmas is carolling. I remember a time during Bethany I, the Church used to go carolling from house to house. There was one time when they came to my home when I still very young. After the carolling session, my eldest brother was allowed to go with the rest of the carollers to the other houses and Pastor Mark and I were not allowed to go with them. I remember feeling very sad about it. Of course, there came a time when we were allowed to do so. Since then, I have always looked forward to these yearly occasions of singing carols even though we do not go from house to house anymore. Joy just feels my heart when we sing about the birth of the Lord Jesus. May we also have this joy as we come to Church this Saturday for a wonderful time of singing carols.
Praising God At The First Christmas Carolling
What was it like during the first Christmas carolling session? The first carollers were the angels. They must have been anticipating this moment for aeons. This is the only recorded time in the Bible that angels sung before people.
“And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Luke 2:13-14
Thousands of angels sang on that beautiful night. How did they go about singing?
1. They Were Praising God With Great Joy
The word “praising” is a Greek word solely used in relating to God. They were extolling God for the birth of our great Saviour. They sung with a great sense of joy.
2. They Were Glorifying God In The Greatest Possible Manner
They gave all glory to God. Through the birth of baby Jesus, there would be peace on earth, especially to men of goodwill. They gave God the highest honour at that first Christmas.
Praising God At Bethany’s Christmas Carolling
“Then the Shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God”
Luke 2:20
The shepherds, after they had seen baby Jesus and the word of the angel was confirmed in their hearts, also praised God in a similar manner as the angelic host. They returned to their hard life as shepherds with a new found spirit of joy, glorifying and praising the Lord. Young people, let’s also worship the Lord as the shepherds and the angels did at that first Christmas. Let’s sing in praise of our Lord with great joy. Let’s give God the highest honour and glory during this Christmas time for the birth of His Son.
