Comprehending The Horrible Nature Of Sin
All of us are born in sin. All of us are unrighteous in the sight of God. This was a reality of life that David recognised when he wrote Psalm 51.
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.”
Psalm 51:5
He was able to see that all men were conceived in iniquity. All men were brought into this world with the innate tendency to sin again and again. As David sinned, he was able to understand how horrible sin can be.
“And my sin is ever before me.
Against You, You only have I sinned,
And done this evil in your sight”
Psalm 51:3-4
Firstly, sin is an entity that troubles us. David was constantly being perturbed by his sins. If we sin, the thoughts and guilt about our sin will come back to haunt us. Secondly, when we commit iniquity, we are sinning directly against God. We are doing evil in His sight. Sinning is an outright rebellion against God. Young people, it is important that we do more than just seeking forgiveness and cleansing. We need to combat sin.
Combating Our Sin Problems
How can we deal with our sin problem?
1. Placing God’s Truth In Our Heart
“Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts”
Psalm 51:6
The Psalmist was conscious that God wanted him to walk in the right way. He desires that we live with His word dwelling within us. The word of God should permeate our heart and soul. The best way to do this is to memorise and mediate on His word. Let’s seek to place the Lord’s truth into our heart, mind and spirit that we may combat sin.
2. Employing Wisdom To Choose Not To Sin Again
“And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.”
Psalm 51:6
With the understanding of the nature of sin, David learnt to be wiser. After experiencing what sin could do in his life, he learnt not to give in to sin easily. When we have experienced the turmoil of sinning against God, He helps us to be more prudent as to how we ought to live. Let’s seek to be wise that we may choose to walk in His ways rather than the ways of sin.
