CHOOSING TO BE A BLESSING TO THE POOR

Reaching Out To The Poor
As we enter into our 37th year of ministry, what may we seek to do further? At our last prayer meeting, Pastor challenged all to be involved in our efforts to aid poor school students. We have come to a point of time where we have paid up all our debts for our Church building. (Praise God!) Now, we are thinking about starting a special fund to sponsor students from our neighbouring schools who come from less-fortunate families. The amount of funds that we are attempting to raise is one million dollars. This fund would go towards helping students pay for their school fees and have some allowance for meals. I personally am excited about giving towards this fund and seeking to be a blessing to the poor. Are you?
Doing What Is Good And Profitable To Men
“This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.”
Titus 3:8
The apostle Paul challenged Titus and fellow Christians to do that which is good in the sight of men. They were meant to be committed to doing good works. If we truly believe in God and we have experienced His salvation and richest blessings, nothing should stop us from responding appropriately in helping those in need. Careful thought must be put into doing this. There are many out there who are average students, come from poor families and are not being helped. A school teacher was telling me how poor students from neighbourhood schools cannot concentrate on their work because they are hungry most of the time. They do not have pocket money to even buy food during recess or lunchtime. Young people, we cannot just stand by and watch these “fall through the cracks” (being left out in aid). The challenge for us is to get down to doing good works. When we help others, this is both good and profitable to men. We will be a tremendous blessing to many.
Avoiding What Is Useless And Unprofitable To Men
“But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.”
Titus 3:9
On the other hand, the challenge for us is to avoid that which totally does not benefit anyone. The apostle Paul knew all too well how it is a real waste of time and resources when people contend and strive with one another. Paul told his readers to shun these foolish disputes and in-fighting with each other. There were some who just loved to argue and strive over the laws of God. What they sought to do was considered futile and unbeneficial. There are some today who preach that all Christians should only use the King James Version Bible. All other translations should not be used. Churches have contended over this matter. They have split over this foolish dispute. Striving parties have also taken each other to court over this. What Paul had written is true. These are such unprofitable and useless endeavours. Let’s seek to totally avoid them. May we not waste time over such foolish pursuits.
