LEARNING TO WAIT UPON GOD

When Problems Are Not Resolved Quickly

Riding out a storm sometimes take time. There are situations when a ship at sea has to face a storm for days and weeks before it is over. When David was going through a time where people were attacking him, he did not know how long these attacks were going to continue.

“How long will you attack a man?”
Psalm 62:3

There are times when it is not easy to face the same problem or challenge day after day, week after week. We can become impatient and upset over this matter. We can also end up being discouraged. The main lesson that we have to learn in such situations is to wait upon the Lord.

Waiting Upon The Lord – Level 1

“Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved.”

Psalm 62:1-2

Despite his predicaments, David learned to quietly wait for God. There was this initial level of faith of trusting in Him. He saw God as rock, salvation and defence. As he learned to wait upon the Lord, he was not greatly moved by what he was going through. The Psalmist learned how to wait upon the Lord.

Waiting Upon The Lord – Level 2

“My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.”

Psalm 62:5-7

There is a deeper level to the idea of waiting upon the Lord. In verses 5-6, the Psalmist repeated what he had written in verses 1-2. As he wrote them, there was a greater trust in God alone. There was the expectancy that God would hear him. He prayed with a deeper understanding of God. As he waited on the Lord further, on this occasion, he wrote of how he would not be moved at all. There was a progress with reference to his faith in God. Let us also learn to practise this.

Telling Others About Trusting In God

“Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.”

Psalm 62:8

When we have learned to wait upon the Lord, we can tell others about what it means to trust in the Lord at all times. We can encourage them to pour out their hearts to the Lord and He will be a special refuge for them. Let’s take the time to tell our friends about trusting in the Lord. Let’s encourage them that God can also be their refuge.
