THE MIND OF CHRIST

Cultivating The Mind Of Christ
Erroneous ways of thinking can affect the way we serve God. There were some in the Philippian Church who were serving with selfish ambitions and personal vainglory in mind. Others were more concerned about themselves rather than the needs of others. Paul had to deal with this problem by presenting an objective way of thinking in service. He challenged all to appropriate the mindset of Christ.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 2:5
The Lord Jesus Christ epitomised for us the right mindset in service. Our commitment is to practise the mind of Christ in all that we do.
Features Of The Mind Of Christ
What is the mind of Christ like?
1. Emptying Of The Desire For Reputation
“But made Himself of no reputation”
Philippians 2:7
The Lord Jesus emptied Himself of the desire to have any form of reputation. He was the Son of God who shared heaven’s great glory. And yet He was willing to set aside all the glory given to Him so that He could be with us.
2. Taking The Nature Of A Lowly Slave
“Taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
Philippians 2:7
The Lord Jesus also took on the nature of a lowly slave. Our nature is such that we tend to put our own concerns first. The Lord Jesus chose to do otherwise. He came to this earth to serve man rather than to be served. He took on the form of a bondservant.
3. Humbling Oneself
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself”
Philippians 2:8
The Son of God also showed great humility by becoming one of us. He chose to be like us for our sakes. He humbly presented Himself for the Lord’s work.
4. Fully Obedient
“And became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Philippians 2:8
The Lord Jesus was totally obedient to God, even submitting to dying on the cross. He was fully committed to doing the will of God. We honor the Lord’s name when we can serve the Lord with such humility. Let’s also seek to be fully obedient to His will.
