The Call To Be Followers Of The Lord Jesus
Have you considered what it means to be disciples of the Lord Jesus? This year, at the YPG level, we are going to focus on the concept of discipleship. The path to being true disciples begins with the call to be followers of the Lord Jesus.
“The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow Me.'”
John 1:43
The phrase “follow me” means “to follow after someone in the same manner”. He is to submit to the Master’s teachings and way of life. The Lord Jesus called Philip to be His disciple and he responded by following after Him. The Lord Jesus also calls us today to be His disciples. Would we seek to be His followers? The call to follow the Lord Jesus is not something we respond to as and when we wish. The call from the Lord is to follow Him continuously on a daily basis. If we seek to follow the Lord, then we are to be His disciples at all times. Every day, we would seek to be trained and to live as disciples. Are you up to the challenge? Let’s rise up to the Lord’s call of being His followers.
Testifying To Others About Jesus
“Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ And Nathanael said to him, ‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ Philip said to him, ‘Come and see.'”
John 1:45-46
When Philip followed the Lord and discovered Jesus for who He is, he testified of Him.
1. Sharing The Reality Of The Lord Jesus From The Scriptures
After hearing from the Lord Jesus, Philip went to find Nathanael and told him that he had found the Messiah. He had some knowledge of the Messiah from the Scriptures. When he saw the Lord Jesus for who He was, he was able to link Him to the Messiah that Moses and the Prophets had prophesied of. He testified of the reality of the Lord Jesus as the Messiah from the Scriptures.
2. Encouraging Others To Be Convinced Of Jesus
Nathanael was sceptical about Jesus being the Messiah at first. Because the Lord Jesus was from Nazareth, and he did not think that the Messiah would come from such an inconspicuous place. Nazareth was known to be a place with negative connotations. He was not easily convinced. Philip encouraged Nathanael to discover for himself who Jesus really was, which he did. When we follow the Lord, we will testify of the Lord to others. Let’s encourage people to be convinced of who Jesus really is. Let’s seek to be good witnesses.
