Understanding The Testimony Of The Lord

“Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord”
2 Timothy 1:8

What is the “testimony of the Lord”? Basically, it is a reference to the witness of our Lord Jesus. The gospel writers have established that the testimony of our Lord Jesus concerning God, Himself and everything that He taught is totally accurate and true. In the text of John 5, there are five witnesses that testified of the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. The Lord Jesus bore witness of Himself (John 5:31, 8:14).
  2. John the Baptiser bore witness of who Jesus really was. (John 5:33).
  3. The great miraculous works of Jesus bore witness that He was sent specially from God (John 5:36).
  4. God the Father also testified of Jesus as the His Son (John 5:37).
  5. The Scriptures themselves testified of the Lord Jesus (John 5:39).

These five witnesses are more than sufficient to verify the divinity of the Lord Jesus. They confirmed that the testimony of the Lord Jesus is true. He is indeed the Son of God. Our personal challenge is not to be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord.

The Challenge To Share In The Suffering Of The Gospel

“But share with me in the sufferings for the gospel”
2 Timothy 1:8

Christians are meant to have the courage to share in suffering for the gospel’s sake. Sometimes, we may have to go through some sufferings in life because of opposition and persecution from non-believers. If the gospel is true, let’s not be afraid to do so.

1. Depending On The Power Of God

“According to the power of God”
2 Timothy 1:8

We can suffer for Christ according to the power of God. He will empower us with grace and strength to go through any suffering for the sake of Christ if we have to.

2. Seeing It As Part Of Our Calling

“Who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began”
2 Timothy 1:9

We have been called according to God’s purpose and grace. If God has been most gracious to us, let’s not be afraid to fulfil His purposes, even if it entails suffering.
