(I) MAGNIFYING OF GOD’S NAME

1. A great desire on the part of the believer

“Oh, magnify the LORD with me…” Psalm 34:3

“…The LORD be magnified!” Psalm 40:16

2. A natural desire to exalt the Lord’s name

a) For who He is

“…great is the glory of the LORD.” Psalm 138:5b

b) For what He does

“Though the LORD is on high,Yet He regards the lowly…” Psalm 138:6

(II) SIGNIFICANCE OF BEING GIVEN GOD’S WORD

1. A new thought

“…You have magnified Your word above all Your name.” Psalm 138:2

2. A new level of thought

a) It is essentially a word of promise

“In the day when I cried out, You answered me” Psalm 138:3a

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

b) There is the promise of strength

“…And made me bold with strength in my soul.” Psalm 138:3b

c) There is the promise of revival

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble,You will revive me…” Psalm 138:7a

d) There is the promise of protection

“…You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies…” Psalm 138:7b

e) There is the promise of deliverance (salvation)

“…And Your right hand will save me.” Psalm 138:7c

d) There is the promise of perfecting what God has begun

“The LORD will perfect that which concerns me…” Psalm 138:8a

(III) MAGNIFYING OF GOD’S WORD

1. That man should be given such lofty words from God

2. Assurance that God would keep His word

3. God’s name and the word given are wonderfully related

4. God cannot break His word once given

“Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promisethe immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.” Hebrews 6:17-18
