The Spirit of the LORD God is Upon Me
Text: Isaiah 61:1-3

(I) THE PERSON OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD
1. The Promise of the Spirit of God
“…I have put My Spirit upon Him…” Isaiah 42:1
“The Spirit of the LORD GOD is upon Me…” Isaiah 61:1a
a) The Spirit of God is identified with God
b) His Personhood is no less than that of Deity
c) His anointing will be upon Jesus the Messiah-Servant
2. The Fulfilment of the Gift of the Spirit of God
“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, ‘You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.’ ” Luke 3:22
a) The Baptism of Jesus
b) The symbolic representation of the Spirit of God as a Dove
c) Approval of Jesus as God’s “Beloved Son”

(II) THE MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD
“The Spirit of the LORD GOD is upon Me,
Because the LORD has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted.
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3

(III) THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO ALL
“Then Peter said to them,
‘Repent and let everyone of you be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is to you and your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38-39
(Cf. Ephesians 1:13-14 ; The Spirit of God is given as a Seal of our salvation in Christ. He is also the Guarantee of our inheritance in the Lord).
