An offering for Sin
Text: Isaiah 53
30 March 2008
(I) THE TERRIBLE BLIGHT OF SIN
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5
“The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.” Genesis 6:11-12
1. Great wickedness
2. Rank evil
3. Corruption
4. Violence
(II) AN OFFERING FOR SIN
1. What could atone for the sins of mankind?
“…Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29
2. How does Jesus take away the sin of the world?
“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,So He opened not His mouth.” Isaiah 53:7
“He was taken from prison and from judgment,And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgression of My people He was stricken.” Isaiah 53:8
“And they made His grave with the wicked- But with the rich at His death,Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.” Isaiah 53:9
“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin…” Isaiah 53:10
“…Because He poured out His soul unto death,And He was numbered with the transgressors,And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12
a) Jesus would have to be perfectly sinless
“…He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit found in His mouth.” Isaiah 53:9
b) Jesus would have to endure any amount of suffering
i) Oppression
ii) Affliction
c) Jesus would have to appease or satisfy all God’s holy requirements!
d) It would take nothing less than the death of the Son of God to be that offering for the sins of mankind!
“…He poured out His soul unto death…” Isaiah 53:12
e) He must be willing to bear all suffering vicariously
“…And He bore the sin of many.” Isaiah 53:12
f) He must be able to intercede for sinners
“…And made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12
(II) APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat.Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.” Isaiah 55:1
“Incline your ear, and come to Me.Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you…” Isaiah 55:3
1. Invitation from God
2. Inclination of the ear to hear this wonderful promise of salvation
3. Implementation of an everlasting covenant with God
