CONCERNING JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD
Text: Romans 1:1-7
25 October 2009
(I) THE FOUR GOSPELS
1. These were biographical accounts of the life of Jesus
2. These were written for the following purposes:-
a) To bear witness of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ
b) To preserve the teachings of Christ
c) To help people come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
d) To dispel wrong doctrines concerning the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ
(II) THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO PAUL
1. He was a controversial figure in the New Testament age
a) He had disciples
b) He also had detractors
2. He was especially gifted
a) With knowledge that came from special revelation from God
b) With supernatural gifts from the Lord
c) With many significant experiences in life and ministry
3. He too proclaimed the Gospel of Christ!
a) He did not write a biographical account of the life of Christ Jesus
b) Instead he contributed a “theological gospel” (Epistle to the Romans)
(III) THE GOSPEL OF PAUL IN A NUTSHELL
1. Properly understood- “The Gospel of God” (Romans 1:1b)
2. Promised through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures (Romans 1:2)
3. Person of Christ is central to his Gospel
“Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 1:3a
4. The Lordship of Jesus Christ as a main feature of Paul’s Gospel
a) Lordship of Jesus as the Son of David
“Who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh” Romans 1:3b
b) The Lordship of Jesus as the Son of God
“And declared to be the Son of God…” Romans 1:4a
c) The Lordship of Jesus backed up by the Spirit of God
“Declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness” Romans 1:4b
d) The Lordship of Jesus proven by His resurrection
“By the resurrection from the dead” Romans 1:4c
e) The Lordship of Jesus demonstrated in His authority to appoint apostles
“Through Him we have received grace and apostleship…” Romans 1:5a
(IV) THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS IN THE LIFE AND MINISTRY OF THE APOSTLE PAUL
1. In his salvation Paul addressed Jesus as “Lord” (Acts 26:15)
2. In his service Paul determined that he would give full obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 22:19) (“Not disobedient”)
3. In his life Paul determined that he would seek to obtain his “crown of righteousness” from the Lord, the righteous Judge (2 Timothy 4:8)
(V) THE PRACTICE OF THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS IN OUR LIFE TODAY
1. What is our understanding of the Lordship of Jesus?
2. What is our practice of the Lordship of Jesus in life?
3. How has the doctrine of the Lordship of Jesus affected our life and ministry?
