THOSE WHO WAIT ON THE LORD SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH
Text: Psalm 37
17 January 2010
(I) THE PROMISE OF “INHERITING THE EARTH”
1. The Promise of the Lord given to those who fear Him
“Who is the man that fears the LORD?Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.He himself shall dwell in prosperity,And his descendants shall inherit the earth” Psalm 25:12-13
2. The Promise of the Lord given to those who wait on Him
“For evildoers shall be cut off;But those who wait on the LORD,They shall inherit the earth” Psalm 37:9
(II) THE ATTEMPTS OF THE WICKED TO INHERIT THE EARTH
1. Through iniquity (Psalm 37:1)
2. Through wicked schemes to obtain wealth (Psalm 37:7)
3. Through evil deeds (Psalm 37:9)
4. God will personally deal with the wicked
The wicked will be “cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb” ( Psalm 37:2, 20, 35-36, 38 )
(III) THE INHERITANCE OF THE EARTH
1. Those who wait on the Lord will not be cut off as the wicked (Psalm 37:9-11)
2. The Lord will bless them with the “prosperity” that the wicked desired (Psalm 25:13)
3. This inheritance includes “abundance of peace” (Psalm 37:11)
4. Their “inheritance shall be forever” (Psalm 37:18)
5. Those who are blessed by the Lord will indeed “inherit the earth” (Psalm 37:22)
6. Inheriting the earth is the Lord’s special way of exalting the righteous (Psalm 37:34)
(IV) THE PRACTICE OF WAITING ON THE LORD
1. What not to do!
a) Do not fret ( Psalm 37:1a )
b) Do not be envious of the workers of iniquity ( Psalm 37:1b )
c) Do not yield to anger ( Psalm 37:8 )
2. What to do!
a) Trust the Lord ( Psalm 37:3a, 40c )
b) Do good ( Psalm 37:3b )
c) Feed on God’s faithfulness ( Psalm 37:3c )
d) Delight in the Lord ( Psalm 37:4 )
e) Commit your way to the Lord ( Psalm 37:5 )
f) Rest in the Lord ( Psalm 37:7a )
g) Wait patiently for Him ( Psalm 37:7b, 34 )
h) Keep His way ( Psalm 37:34b )
i) Practise uprightness ( Psalm 37:37 )
