Reviewing the book of Hebrews
This Christmas, we are focusing on the names and titles of the Lord Jesus. It is amazing to consider all the names of the Lord. Each name has its own special significance that will give us a greater understanding of the Lord Jesus and what He came to do for us.
In going through the book of Hebrews, we have been studying the names and the titles of the Lord Jesus throughout the year.
It would be good for us to remember and to reflect on the names of the Lord Jesus. Have we found a deeper sense of appreciation for these names of the Lord over this year?
The names of Christ
Let us recall the names of the Lord Jesus for our consideration.
- The Son of man (Heb 2:6,14)
The Lord Jesus became the Son of man. He was made to become a man for the suffering of death and through death He might destroy the power of death and the devil.
- The captain of our salvation (Heb 2:10)
The Lord is the “captain” of our salvation. As the “leader”, the Lord leads sinners to become sons of glory.
- A merciful and faithful High Priest (Heb 2:17)
The Lord is our Great High Priest in all things pertaining to God. He is able to come to our aid effectively as He had suffered, being tempted as we do.
- The Apostle (Heb 3:1)
The word “apostle” means the sent one. The Lord Jesus was sent out as the messenger of God to fulfil His task.
- The Son of God Heb (Heb 4:14)
The Lord Jesus is the Son of God. He is truly divine and He came to fulfil all that His heavenly Father had sent Him to do.
- The Minister of the Sanctuary (Heb 8:3)
Christ is the minister of the heavenly tabernacle. He stands before God and mediates on our behalf.
- The Mediator of the New Covenant (Heb 8:6)
The Lord is the Mediator of a better Covenant which is based on better promises. He ushered in the New Covenant that we may life in Him.
Each of these names is truly significant. Through Christ, we are given not only access to the Father at His throne but also to have a deeper communion with Him.
“But we see Jesus”
What a wonderful Christ we have! Let us be challenged to see Jesus in all His glory. Let us be challenged to give worship to the Lord Jesus this Christmas for all that He is.
