MANY WAYS TO STUDY THE PAULINE EPISTLES

The epistles of Paul are deep and exciting. There are many ways to study his epistles. It is always good to look at his epistles from a number of viewpoints. Two may be highlighted:-

1. The Theological Viewpoint

Paul offers deep and rich theological insights. His teachings reveal wonderful and precious truths that bless our hearts.

2. Literary Structure

There is very definite literary structure in all of Paul’s epistles. We may make the following observations as we take a fresh look at Ephesians:-

a) Greetings Ephesians 1:1-2
b) Reflections on the subject of “God’s blessings” Ephesians 1:3-14
i) Enumeration of God’s blessings
ii) Elaboration of God’s Plan of Redemption
c) Intercessory prayer Ephesians 1:15-19
d) Further Reflections on the Redemptive Plan of God Ephesians 1:20-23

AN APPRECIATION OF THE MINISTRY OF THE APOSTLE PAUL

Certain characteristics are discernible in Paul’s ministry. Five may be highlighted, among other features:-

1. Pioneer work

“And so I have made it my aim to preach the Gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation.”
Romans 15:20

2. Proclamation of the Gospel

“So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach…the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…”
Romans 1:15-16

3. Powerful apostolic sign-miracles

“In mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God…”
Romans 15:19

4. Prayer Ministry

“Therefore I also… do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.”
Ephesians 1:15-16

5. Personal lifestyle

“But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life…”
2 Timothy 3:10
