Ephesians
"And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power."
Text: Ephesians 1:19
COMPREHENSION OF THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S POWER
Paul’s prayer may have been brief, but it does not lack depth of thought. It was right to begin with a prayer for enlightenment from the Spirit of God. As Paul brought his prayer to a close, he pleaded for comprehension of the mighty power of God deployed in the life of the believer.
A SOLILOQUY ON THE SUBJECT OF GOD’S POWER
For some strange reason, ancient Israel had forgotten the majestic power of God. Isaiah the prophet wrote a powerful soliloquy on this subject to awake the nation’s appreciation of God’s power.
“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
Measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth
in a measure?
Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,
Or as His counselor has taught Him?
With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him,
And taught Him in the path o f justice?
Who taught Him knowledge, and showed Him the
way of understanding?
Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket,
And are counted as the small dust on the scales;
Look, He lifts up the isles as a very little thing.”
ISAIAH 40:12-15
Isaiah dwelt on the things that impress many people. But how do they compare with the glorious power of God?
1. The mighty oceans
But to God, these bodies of water could be measured “in the hollow of His hand” (Isaiah 40:12).
2. The glorious heavens
But God can measure the heavens “with a span” (Isaiah 40:12).
3. The majestic mountains and hills
These could be weighed “in a balance” as far as God was concerned (Isaiah 40:12).
4. The nations of the earth
These would include empires, but they were only “a drop in a bucket” to God (Isaiah 40:15).
The power of God was certainly not lost on Isaiah. How he wished that his beloved nation could appreciate God’s power.
EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF HIS POWER
God’s majestic power was also not lost on the apostle Paul. His prayer was for the Ephesian brethren to comprehend the power of God and how it could be applied into their life. How wonderful it would be if believers knew how to tap God’s power into their daily life.
