The Rock Of Refuge

Finding safety in times of difficulties

There will be moments in our life when we find ourselves facing all sorts of challenges. We see ourselves in great need of safety and deliverance. As we are faced with these overwhelming circumstances, we may allow fear and anxiety to grip us.

We would also discover that we are unable to help ourselves. Both our thinking and spirit can be badly affected. We can end up feeling down and in despair.

For David, it was the difficulty of facing enemies who sought his life. This was his struggle. For us, it could be the challenges of life that could unsettle our hearts and minds.

As such, it is good that we recognize our great need for God to be our rock. How can we learn to look to God?

Putting our trust in God as our rock

“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; let me never be ashamed; deliver me in Your righteousness.” (Ps 31:1)
The Psalmist sought to place his firm and absolute trust in God as his rock.

Was it a wise focus to have? The answer is ‘Yes!”…for his trust would not result in him being ashamed. His trust in God would not be in vain.

His trust would lead him to a positive outcome such as receiving the Lord’s righteous deliverance. Let us be challenged to put our trust in the Lord.

Pleading to God to be our rock

“Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily; be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me.” (Ps 31:2)

David humbly pleaded for God to be His rock of refuge. A rock is meant to provide sanctuary and safety. The Lord would keep him from all harm.

He also looked to God as a fortress. A fortress is a well-fortified place that is meant to defend. The Lord would protect him from all challenges.

Our trust in God should lead us to plead for His deliverance urgently and humbly.

Personal assurance of God as our rock

“For You are my rock and my fortress; therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.” (Ps 31:3)

A personal trust in God should cause us to have great certainty in God. The Lord was personal to David as his rock and fortress

In the same way, we should have a personal trust and assurance of God. For His name sake, He will answer our prayers

Let us look to God to lead and guide us through these challenging moments. Let us look to God to be our rock and our fortress.
