"There are many insubordinate..."

Text: Titus 1:10

THE CONTEXT EXPLAINED

The ministry of the bishop becomes more significant if we have a better comprehension of the problems that confronted the churches in Crete. The need for strong and bold servants of God who were able to teach effectively was obvious.

“For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers,
especially those of the circumcision.”
Titus 1:10

1. “For there are many insubordinate”

a) The word “many” was used deliberately.

b) The problem of insubordinates was not limited to just a few people!

2. The word “insubordinate”

a) This was mentioned earlier (Titus 1:6).

b) Paul cautioned Titus to look for elders who had good children.

c) Their children must not be guilty of insubordination.

d) If the children were insubordinate and the elder-bishop cannot control them how would he effectively admonish the insubordinates who were in the church?

e) Characteristic features:-

i) Disobedient

ii) Disorderly

iii) Out of control

3. “Idle talkers”

a) They speak empty words.

b) Timothy encountered them in Ephesus too (1 Timothy 1:6).

4. “Deceivers”

a) These walked in deception.

b) They seek to deceive people who did not know better.

5. “Especially those of the circumcision”

a) This is a reference to the enemies of the gospel.

b) They taught that belief in Christ was insufficient for salvation.

c) The men must be circumcised to be saved.

(The apostle Paul had to strenuously resist them among the Galatian churches.)
