Titus
"The kindness and the love of God..."
Text: Titus 3:4
REMEMBERING GOD’S KINDNESS AND LOVE
As much as we do not forget our past sinful ways, we must never forget God’s kindness and love! The sad reality is that we tend to take God’s love too much for granted!
“But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour
toward man appeared.”
Titus 3:4
1. “But when”
a) Paul was making a specific time reference.
b) In his mind he was thinking of when God made this happen.
c) In this context it is a clear reference to the Lord Jesus Christ being sent to bring us salvation.
2. “The kindness”
a) This word has many rich nuances.
b) Two aspects may be highlighted:
i) Mercy
ii) Goodness
c) We are reminded of “the lovingkindness of God” (Psalm 51:1).
d) The psalmists often pleaded the lovingkindness of God when confessing sin and asking for pardon.
3. “And the love of God”
a) This is not a reference to the general love of God.
b) It is good to bear in mind that Paul was speaking of two specific and separate things.
i) The kindness of God/h6>
ii) The love of God
c) Both nouns had a definite article attached to highlight them.
4. “God our Saviour”
a) The reference is God the Father.
b) A careful study of the context will bear this out.
c) The same construction may be found in Titus 1:3.
d) God the Father may be spoken of as “Saviour” too.
5. “Appeared”
c) We are reminded of “the lovingkindness of God” (Psalm 51:1).
d) The psalmists often pleaded the lovingkindness of God when confessing sin and asking for pardon.
