The Sabbath

THE SABBATH

1. A sign between God and the children of Israel   (Exodus 31:13, 16)

2. A symbol of the work of God sanctifying His people   (Exodus 31:13)

a) That you may know
b) I am the LORD
c) Who sanctifies you

KEEPING OF THE SABBATH

1. You shall keep the Sabbath   (Exodus 31:14)

2. It is holy to you   (Exodus 31:14)

3. The children of Israel   (Exodus 31:16)

THE SABBATH COVENANT

1. It is to be understood as a covenant

2. It is a perpetual covenant   (Exodus 31:16)

BREAKING OF THE SABBATH

1. Profaning of the Sabbath   (Exodus 31:14)

2. What is profaning of the Sabbath   (Exodus 31:14)

a) Normal work on the Sabbath
b) Disregard for the Lord
c) Disregard of this commandment

3. Penalty for breaking the Sabbath

Death   (Exodus 31:15)

WHAT THE SABBATH WAS MEANT TO BE

1. To be kept as a holy day   (Exodus 31:13-14)

2. To ensure that it does not become profane   (Exodus 31:14)

3. To rest   (Exodus 31:14-15)

4. To be refreshed   (Exodus 31:17)

5. To appreciate the idea of being sanctified   (Exodus 31:13)

HOW THE LORD JESUS KEPT THE SABBATH

1. He kept the Sabbath   (Mark 3:1)

a) He attended worship
i) Temple
ii) Synagogue
b) He healed
Doing good deeds is not “work”   (Mark 3:4; John 5:1-10)
c) Works of necessity
They do not profane the Sabbath   (Mark 2:23-26)

2. He is Lord of the Sabbath   (Mark 2:28)

a) The Sabbath was made for man
b) Not man for the Sabbath   (Mark 2:27)
