“And They Remembered His Words”

THE REALITY OF A RISEN SAVIOUR

Is the resurrection of Christ real to us? It should be! There should be no doubt in our heart that Christ had indeed risen. This was a cogent truth that angels affirmed when certain women went to the tomb of the Lord Jesus on the first day of the week. Not only did they find an empty tomb, they also heard two shining angels say these definitive words to them:

“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!”
Luke 24:5-6

They succinctly raised an observable fact in the form of a rhetorical question. Why were the women seeking a living Saviour among the dead? The Lord Jesus was no longer in the tomb but had risen. There is the undeniable reality of a resurrected and living Saviour.

THE CHALLENGE TO REMEMBER THE LORD’S WORD

“Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’”
Luke 24:6-7

The angels challenged the women to recall what the Lord had told them concerning His sufferings, death and resurrection. He had distinctly told His disciples on a few occasions concerning this matter. The Lord Jesus spoke of how He must suffer many things and be rejected by the religious leaders, be killed and be raised on the third day (Luke 9:22). He would also be betrayed into the hands of men (Luke 9:44). He would also be delivered to the Gentiles, mocked, tortured, be killed but will rise on the third day (Luke 18:33). The angels brought an imperatival word to the women to personally remember what the Lord had prophesied.

THE RESPONSE OF FAITH WHEN FACT AND THE WORD ARE CONNECTED

“And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.”
Luke 24:8-9

How does the fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ become real to us personally? It can be when we are able to connect it with the trustworthiness of the words of Christ. The angels helped the women to relate what they were seeing (an empty tomb) with Christ’s spoken words. The Holy Spirit must have also helped them to remember and perceive the Lord’s word (John 14:6). The women responded with faith in the resurrection of Christ. They returned from the tomb and told everything to the disciples. Young people, let’s also take time to remember the word of God. Let’s take time to remember and reflect on all that was taught during the Easter week. There is much that we can ponder over and exercise faith in.

THE PROBLEM OF A LACK OF FAITH

“And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.”
Luke 24:11

While the women had faith in the resurrection of Christ, the men, on the other hand, had a different reaction. The words that were spoken to the disciples unfortunately seemed like nonsense. There was no belief that Christ had resurrected. At this point of time, the disciples did not believe the witness of the women, and neither did they remember the Lord’s words. Young people, maybe you too are struggling with a lack of faith in the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps, you are struggling with doubts. It would be good to seek help and to clear all doubts with the truth of His word.
