"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

Text: Ephesians 4:30

THE IDEA OF GRIEVING THE SPIRIT OF GOD

What does the word “grieve” (“lupeite”) suggest? This word literally suggests the idea of “sorrow” or “grief”. How may the Spirit of God be grieved? The straightforward answer is found in the immediate context.

THE SINS THAT GRIEVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD

The immediate literary context suggests that the following sins will grieve the Holy Spirit of God in particular:-

1. If the old nature is indulged in (Ephesians 4:22)

2. If one ends up corrupt (Ephesians 4:22)

3. If one is fond of lying (Ephesians 4:25)

4. If one is always full of wrath (Ephesians 4:26)

5. If one keeps yielding to the devil (Ephesians 4:27)

6. If one kept stealing from others (Ephesians 4:28)

7. If one kept using corrupt speech (Ephesians 4:29)

Pain should be felt by the genuine child of God. How could he bear to cause sorrow to the Holy Spirit of God?

THE VITAL WORK OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN OUR LIFE

Let us take time to review the profound work of the Spirit of God in our hearts. May the knowledge of His vital ministries cause us not to consciously grieve Him!

1. He is our Divine Seal that we belong to God (Ephesians 1:13)

2. He is our Glorious Guarantee of our redemption (Ephesians 1:14)

3. He brings spiritual enlightenment/revelation (Ephesians 1:17; 3:5)

4. He enables us to have access to God (Ephesians 2:18)

5. He is the Builder of God’s household (Ephesians 2:22)

6. He brings about true unity in the Church (Ephesians 4:3)
