Day 6

"You do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren..."

Text: 3 John 5

HOW DID GAIUS WALK IN THE TRUTH?

That the Apostle John found great delight and joy in Gaius is obvious. John declared this openly and strongly. But what was it that Gaius did that showed he walked in the truth?

“Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do
for the brethren and for strangers.”
3 John 5

1. “Beloved”

a) Once again John used this term of endearment.
b) He was obviously delighted in his spiritual son Gaius.

2. “You do faithfully”

a) Gaius displayed faithfulness.
b) His works for the Lord were not sporadic.
c) His works were faithfully executed.
i) They were done out of faith.
ii) They were done consistently.

3. “Whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers”

a) Two set of beneficiaries were singled out.
i) Brethren (fellow-believers)
ii) Strangers (those who may be outside the faith)

RECALLING JOHN’S PRAYER FOR GAIUS

Let us recall what John prayed for when he brought his name to the Lord in prayer.

1. That he might prosper.

2. That he might be in good health.

The focus of John’s prayer might well be closely connected with what Gaius was doing for the brethren and for strangers.

A LIKELY MINISTRY

Gaius’ ministry was most probably providing strong monetary support:-

1. “For the brethren”

a) Support for those in ministry.
b) Support for those who may be going through hard times financially.

2. “For strangers”

Most likely Gaius was involved in philanthropic endeavours. There will always be poor people who need help!
