Ephesians
"Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness."
Text: Ephesians 6:14
EXAMINING EACH PIECE OF THE PANOPLY OF GOD
Paul went on to describe each piece of the panoply God had given. Each piece is then associated with a vital Biblical truth.
“Having girded our waist”
1. A picture of preparation
In this text (Ephesians 6:14-17), Paul described how a soldier would typically put on his armour. The Christian solider must learn how he too ought to put on his armour.
2. The idea of girding (“perizosamenoi”)
The soldier in preparing for battle must be sure that he is well girded. The word “girded” makes reference to at least three types of belts:-
a) A leather apron worn to protect the lower abdomen.
b) The sword belt.
c) A special belt to designate and distinguish an officer from the rank and file.
“Having girded our waist with truth”
1. The place of “truth”
a) The Living Truth.
Jesus called Himself the Way, the Truth and the life (Cf. John 14:6).
b) The word of Truth.
i) Jesus always spoke of His teachings as truth.
ii) His truth is so powerful, it sets a person free from the power of sin (Cf. John 8:32).
c) All believers are to speak truthfully (Cf. Ephesians 4:25).
2. In direct contrast
a) Lying must ever be set aside (Cf. Ephesians 4:25).
b) Corrupt speech must also never be employed (Cf. Ephesians 4:29).
THE BELT OF TRUTH
The believer is able to withstand any attack from the enemy, as long as he abides in the truth. Every endeavour must be made to know and to abide in the Truth.
