Jude
Day
Day 3

"Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you."

Text: Jude 2

GOOD WISHES

It was normal practice for a writer to send good wishes to his readers. The three-fold wish is quite standard. But they also pack deep theological content and impact.

1. “Mercy”

a) We are reminded of the mercies of God.
b) Just about every blessing has its roots in God’s mercies.
c) Mercy is a core and integral part of the Being of God.
d) Often closely associated with this word is “grace”.

2. “Peace”

a) Theological aspect of peace.

i) God has removed His wrath.

ii) All our sins have been forgiven in and through Christ Jesus.

iii) We do indeed have “peace with God”.

b) Personal aspect of peace.

i) This may affect our heart.

ii) There is also “peace of mind”.

iii) The heart and mind may be at peace when we learn to trust in God fully.

3. “Love”

a) There is love from the Lord.
b) There is love for the Lord.
c) There is also love for each other.

4. “Be multiplied”

a) There should be no attempt to differentiate between “addition” and “multiplication”.
b) Some have sought to make a distinction between the two.
c) The root meaning is simply that of “increase”.

5. Literal translation of Jude 2

“Mercy to you and peace, and love be increased.”

Jude wanted his readers to know that he wished his readers well. His wish was that they would see the mercy, peace and love of the Lord increase in their lives. These good wishes reflect the kind and gracious heart of Jude.
