"Remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles..."

Text: Jude 17

A STRONG DEFENCE NEEDED

How may people prevent themselves from falling prey to the false teachers who seem to be very persuasive speakers? Jude had this suggestion to offer.

“But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before
by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Jude 17

1. “But you, beloved”

a) Jude was deeply concerned.
b) His readers were dear to him.
c) They were “beloved”.

2. “Remember”

a) Jude had done his part.
i) He had identified the false teachers.
ii) He had exposed them as false teachers and false brethren.
iii) He had minced no words describing their character and their wicked ways.
b) The believer must do his part.
i) He must learn.
ii) He must be discerning.
iii) He must choose to recall and to remember what he had been taught.

3. “The words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) “The words which were spoken before”
i) The readers of Jude had the privilege of hearing the apostles of Christ personally.
ii) Those words would stand them in good stead.
iii) But they must take the trouble to recall and to remember.
b) The ministry of “the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ”
i) They proclaimed the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) They laid the foundation of the Church.
iii) They also defended the gospel message against false teachers.
iv) Some of these apostles also wrote important epistles.
v) They had carefully kept the faith and teachings that the Lord Jesus had taught.
